Larch Class Autumn Term 2

Larch Class have been very busy over the autumn term. We have finished learning about the Romans and the children are looking forward to sharing some of what they’ve learnt during an assembly (date to be advised!). For Christmas, the children made marshmallow snowmen for the PFA Christmas Fayre and also used their computing skills to produce letters to Santa for younger children to purchase: the class raised approx. £55 towards this event which is a fantastic achievement! The snowmen were great fun to make and were a particular favourite amongst the children (and adults!) at the Fayre.

In Music, the children had to compose their own musical accompaniment to the poem “T’was the Night before Christmas’. The children used the GarageBand app along with a variety of musical instruments to add pitch, rhythm and tempo.  Some of the children also played instruments during our Christmas Carol/Nativity event – they did brilliantly!

We have had some visitors this term during RE. Mrs Khan came to talk to the children about The Five Pillars of Islam and the importance of Mecca and Mrs D’Souza called to talk to the children about her experience of pilgrimages and the spiritual importance of going on such a journey. We were very grateful to both ladies for calling in to share their beliefs and experiences.

For Remembrance Sunday, the children presented their own Collective Worship on the importance of remembering the sacrifice made by so many soldiers. We also had a visitor, dressed as a soldier from WWI, who completed an interactive workshop with the children.

In Maths, we are working hard to learn all of our multiplication facts ready for the SATs test that Year 4 will be sitting during the summer term. We held a ‘times tables games morning’ during which the children all learnt games that can be played at home to learn their recall facts. Ask them to show you some of the games and apps J

I thank you for your continued support and look forward to a busy spring term.

Larch Class Autumn Term 1

The children all appear to have settled well into their new school year and here are some pictures to show what we’ve been doing during this term.

Our topic this term is The Romans and the children have really enjoyed learning all about the Roman invasion of Britain by Claudius and how the Romans enjoyed watching gladiators fight lions, tigers and elephants. We have learnt lots about the Roman army and each child made a Roman shield and practiced marching in formation as a Roman soldier would.

In computing, the children have learnt lots of new processing skills and used these to produce a poster to advertise a gladiator fight.

In Science, we have been learning all about solids, liquids and gases. The children enjoyed our experiment to measure the gas within bottles of fizzy drink and making chocolate cakes helped them to understand that some materials can exist in different states. I hope you enjoyed the cakes they made for you!

We did some drama to help us to understand the feelings and emotions of the main character within our class book – Flotsam - and they then produced a diary entry for the day the boy visited the beach.

Our author of the term is Roald Dahl and we are reading Danny the Champion of the World during our Guided Reading classes. For Roald Dahl Day, the children worked in groups to make a collage of Mr Twit’s beard. We had great fun!

In Maths we have revisited place value and learnt about negative numbers. They have been finding out about Roman numerals and each did a quiz where they won a ‘Roman’ (chocolate) coin if they got the correct answer!

Enjoy the half-term break.
